For all of history it has been God’s desire that the peoples of the world come to worship Him. When he sent Jesus to this earth, it was with the intent that He demonstrate His love for mankind so that each of us would love and follow Him. He left us the Great Commandments (love God and love others) and the Great Commission (help make other disciples).
But historic religious workers (missionaries) are not wanted in more than 70 countries and this represents about 65% of the world’s population. But that should not be discouraging since the professional vocational clergy is not the only way to live like Jesus, show His love and draw others to follow Him. God told Abraham to “bless the nations” and Jesus showed the way by how he “looked with compassion on the crowds” and met physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs.
What might love look like in today’s world of poverty, injustice and unemployment? Jim Clifton, CEO of Gallup and author of The Coming Jobs War asserts “…the single most searing, clarifying, helpful, world-altering fact: what the whole world wants is a good job.” Professional people are uniquely qualified to enter most any country, present their skill and expertise and create jobs, while all the while living out kingdom values in the market place.
Business as Mission (BAM) can be described as the integration of real viable and sustainable business with living like Jesus and making His followers. Work place professionals such as accountants, managers, entrepreneurs, marketers, sales people, technical experts and many others can live out the kingdom of God in any place on earth. Thus individuals and whole communities can be transformed – for the Glory of God!
